Five Teams Interested In Coyotes G Darcy Kuemper

Among the most discussed names coming out of Arizona is goaltender Darcy Kuemper. And, the trade talk is starting to heat up.

There is no shortage of trade rumors coming out of Arizona these days. A new GM isn’t going to change the situation the team finds itself in — very few draft picks, financial peril and needing to take care of a few pressing roster issues.

Among the most discussed names related to speculation surrounding the hockey team is goaltender Darcy Kuemper. And, the trade talk is starting to heat up.

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet the Coyotes have heard from at least five different NHL clubs in respect to Kuemper’s availability and the cost of acquiring the netminder in a deal. Those teams are the Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, and San Jose Sharks.

Each team has different issues overall, but the commonality between them is that all of those organizations are looking for an upgrade in goal. At the very least, the future between the pipes in 2020-21 season is uncertain.

Kuemper, 30, has two years left on his contract with the Coyotes and carries a $4.5 million cap hit. It’s a reasonable deal considering his showing in this year’s playoffs. And, since the beginning of the 2017-18 season, Kuemper has posted a 55-38-15 record with 11 shutouts and a .924 save percentage in 113 appearances.

The Coyotes also have newly signed Adin Hill and veteran Antti Raanta on the roster. As such, even if the Coyotes weren’t in financial difficulties or looking to recoup picks, one of the team’s goalies was likely on the move.

More Action Out of Arizona

Apparently, interest in Kuemper is just the start of the action the Coyotes are getting on some of their assets. Darren Dreger of TSN noted that the club has made it known they’ll field calls on anyone over the age of 25, and the Flames, Oilers and Boston Bruins have all apparently “checked in” on defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Friedman also noted the Colorado Avalanche have asked about Niklas Hjalmarsson.
