When Taylor Hall was traded from the New Jersey Devils to the Arizona Coyotes, one of the first things people did was analyze the return and do so in the context of Hall being a rental. If Hall was only going to be with the Coyotes for the remainder of this season, was a first-round pick, plus a conditional pick and prospects too big a haul for Hall?
When Hall spoke to the media, he gave a bit of a sense of relief to Coyotes fans, even if the vibe was still that he’s more likely to leave. Essentially, he didn’t say ‘no’ to a contract extension.
Hall Says Extension is Possible
During his conference call with the media after being traded, Hall did what most players do when they’re moved… say that he was excited to be joining the team that acquired him. It’s not to say this isn’t true in Hall’s case, but as
ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski explained, he got the vibe from Hall on the conference call that Arizona was not where he will call home long-term.
That said, Arizona is much more likely to make it to the postseason than New Jersey and for that, Hall is likely relieved. He badly wants to go to the playoffs again and reports are, the biggest consideration for him signing anywhere this summer is playing for a contender.
When asked if he was open to signing an extension with the organization, he said he would be open to it, even before free agency on July 1st. It likely won’t come much sooner than that.
Hall stated that he and Coyotes GM John Chayka have a mutual understanding that they won’t get into contract discussions anytime soon. Both sides will let things play out and go from there.
In other words, if the Coyotes win, there’s a chance. If they don’t he’s gone. He’s likely gone anyways, but at least all hope isn’t completely out the window.
