Game Notes:

The Hurricanes lead the series 1-0 after what was a penalty-filled affair. There were questions about whether or not Henrik Lundqvist would get the start in net again or if the returning Igor Shesterkin will take the pipes for the Rangers. It was Lundqvist who would get the nod with Shesterkin being listed as day-to-day.

The Rangers were also without the services of Jesper Fast and the Hurricanes had defenseman Dougie Hamilton skating, but not quite ready to play.

The Hurricanes took an early lead on a goal by Andrei Svechnikov and around the 12-minute mark, Artemi Panarin tied it up for the Rangers with a power play marker. Shots were fairly even through 16 minutes as the Rangers would go on another man-advantage. Carolina didn’t like slash call on Sebastian Aho that set up NYR 5-on-3 goal but it was a slash.

Early in the second, it was the Hurricanes and Svechnikov who scored again. At 1:11 on the power play, the Hurricanes had a 2-1 lead. Seconds later, the Hurricanes scored again. It led to head coach David Quinn calling a time out for the Rangers.

In the third, the Rangers couldn’t get on the scoreboard and with only a few minutes left, Svechnikov scored his third of the game and the first hat trick in Hurricanes’ playoff franchise history.

The game ended 4-1 and the Hurricanes now have a commanding 2-0 series lead.
