Game Notes:

The Boston Bruins fell by a score of 3-2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Wednesday night’s tilt between the two Atlantic Division juggernauts. The Bruins would continue their trend of slow, broken plays without much rhythm while the Lightning looked locked-in early. They’d take a 2-0 lead in the first period despite being outshot by the Bruins 9-8 in the opening frame. Brayden Points and Alex Killorn would both score their first goals of the bubble with Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat assisting on Point’s goal and Victor Hedman and Tyler Johnson recording the apples on Killorn’s.

The second and third periods were significantly different for the Bruins as they’d very clearly find their rhythm and looked much like the Bruins who won the President’s Trophy in the regular season that the Bruins that showed up to the bubble in Toronto. Charlie McAvoy would score his first of the tournament with assists coming from Torey Krug and Patrice Bergeron cutting the Lightning’s lead in half for the Bruins late in the second period.

In the third period, Chris Wager would score early, tying the game after Wagner cleaned up a blast from Zdeno Chara who was credited with an assist on the play.

The Lightning wouldn’t be silenced, however, and they’d score a dagger with 1:27 to go in the third period. Johnson would score the goal, his second point of the night, with Yanni Gourde and Killorn notching the assists.

With this win, the Lightning are sitting comfortably in the round-robin tournament with four out of four points earned. The Bruins, on the other hand, are now ineligible to finish in first place coming out of the round-robin.

For the Lightning, this was an even more impressive feat. given that they’ve accomplished these two wins against the Washington Capitals and the Bruins without captain Steve Stamkos. They’ll take on the Philadelphia Flyers to close out their round-robin play while the Bruins are set to take on the Capitals in their finale.

Pre-Game Notes:

The Boston Bruins need a win following a less-than-stellar opener in Eastern Conference round-robin play. To help motivate the team, they might get a boost in net with the return of Tuukka Rask. One of three finalists for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goalie, Rask is expected to be in goal Wednesday when the Bruins play their second round-robin game, this time against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Lightning earned a 3-2 shootout win Monday over the Washington Capitals. Nikita Kucherov was the star, scoring in regulation and the shootout goal.
