Islanders beat Panthers in Game 2

The New York Islanders have made things very difficult for the Florida Panthers. Now up 2-0 in the best-of-five series, it will take an inspired effort from the Panthers to rebound.

A two-goal performance by Jordan Eberle (his first the game-winner) was enough to put the Panthers down for good. Matt Martin and Ryan Pulock scored for the Islanders in the win, while Mike Hoffman and Aleksander Barkov scored for the Panthers in the loss.

The Islanders had seven power plays in this game, scoring on two of them. The Panthers are going to need to stay out of the penalty box in Game 3 if they want to give themselves a chance.

Game Notes:

The seventh-seeded Islanders will look to take a commanding lead in this best-of-five series. If they can go up 2-0, it will be hard for the Panthers to rebound, especially as the lower seed. Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Anthony Beauvillier scored and goalie for the Islanders in Game 1 and Semyon Varlamov made 27 saves to lead New York to a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Islanders had to play most of the final two periods without defenseman Johnny Boychuk, who took a hit to the head from Panthers defenseman Mike Matheson. There is no update on his availability for Tuesday’s game.
