Rumor: Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs Ending Relationship

Is it true that Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs are done working together and that Leonard wants out? Here is the latest on the rumors of a Kawhi trade and who might be interested in San Antonio’s star player.

According to a story by Bleacher Report, the San Antonio Spurs and Kawhi Leonard may have gone past the point of no return as it pertains to mending a rocky relationship. Such an irreparable relationship could mean that Leonard — San Antonio’s best player — could be on the way out and the Spurs are looking at going a different direction. The report asks, “with Leonard, 26, eligible for a five-year, $219 million ‘super-max’ extension this summer, the key question circulating through the league is, “Can the relationship be salvaged?” A Western Conference executive doesn’t seem to think so, saying, “At the end of the day, Kawhi wants out.”

Leonard didn’t play much this past season due to a serious quad injury but the news lately is that he could have played in the playoffs and his injury is far too mysterious for the Spurs to stay comfortable handing the reigns of the team over to Leonard and making him the face of the franchise with Tim Duncan no longer part of the picture.

Other reports have surfaced there are teams like the Boston Celtics interested in trading for the star NBA that teams like the Los Angeles Lakers have pulled out of the running when it comes to trading for Leonard because they know he’s leaving and they can simply sign him over the summer. Some have speculated that he could go to Cleveland if LeBron James chose to stay and other have said Portland may work its way into the conversation.

The same executive said, “I’m surprised beyond belief that this thing got to the point that it did,” but it appears that it has and a different Western Conference executive said teams are “lining up to try to do something.” All of this depends on if the Spurs choose to indeed trade Leonard who is rumored to want out.

At this point, both sides have been quiet with only anonymous execs doing the speaking for them. If true, perhaps it’s only a matter of time before the story becomes much louder.
