[Report] Puljujarvi Still Expected to Sign Contract With Oilers

Mark Spector is reporting that Jesse Puljujarvi’s deal in Finland is only a backup plan and he’s still likely to sign with the Oilers.

Jesse-Puljujärvi

According to Sportsnet’s Mark Spector, despite having signed a contract in Finland, there is still an expectation that Jesse Puljuajrvi will be signing a contract with the Edmonton Oilers and returning to the team in time for next season’s training camp.

This comes as news to a lot of fans who heard of Puljuarvi’s signing and reports from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that noted “it sounds like the Oilers thought a signing was close, the player not so much. We will see where this goes. A trade is still possible.” The way the story was being told, it appeared the Puljujarvi shipped had sailed unless a trade was taking place.

Spector writes:

For now, Puljujarvi has re-signed with his hometown team in Finland, Oulun Karpat. It’s an insurance policy, both because he does not have an NHL deal and no one is sure when the NHL will open camp for the 2020-21 season.

He’s currently at Karpat’s training camp and scoring pre-season goals, with a clause in his Liiga contract that allows Puljujarvi to leave for the NHL any time prior to the transfer deadline for players coming from Europe.

What Kind of Deal Is Holland Looking to Sell?

Spector adds that Oilers general manager Ken Holland will likely try to get Puljujarvi to sign for as close to $1 million as possible and add a handshake agreement that he’ll trade the player if he doesn’t find success in Edmonton after he returns. That’s a bit of a risk considering there might not be a large marketplace for the player if he returns and doesn’t show progression.

Still, if Puljujarvi agrees to those terms and signs the deal, he’ll be an Oiler when training camp opens as early as Nov. 15.

In case Oilers fans are wondering how he’s doing in his preseason games thus far… Puljujarvi has scored 10 points in two games for Karpat.
