Red Wings’ Filip Zadina Headed to Czech Republic?

Red Wings’ prospect Filip Zadina may head to Europe to play in the Czech Republic,, according to a team tweet.

There is buzz Thursday that Detroit Red Wings’ prospect Filip Zadina is headed overseas and will soon join a team out of his native Czech Republic.

HC Ocelari Trinec of the Czech Extraliga all but confirmed that news when the responded to a tweet on Thursday. Why Make This Move?

The possibility of the AHL not playing in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic has teams, including the Detroit Red Wings concerned some of their young players and top prospects will miss valuable development time. So, if an opportunity to put Zadina on a team that would see him play a lot and in a system they can get constant feedback on, it’s a win/win.

If Zadina moves, he would play for Ocelari, which is a top team in the Extraliga and employs Zadina’s father, Marek Zadina, an assistant coach.

There has been speculation the Red Wings and GM Steve Yzerman want Zadina playing sooner than later. That might mean moving out of the NHL if there’s not an immediate spot for him on the Red Wings roster.

Joe Veleno, who had 23 points in 54 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins, may join Zadina.
