Rangers Trade D Marc Staal to Red Wings

The New York Rangers announce they have traded defenseman Marc Staal and a 2021 second-round selection to Detroit for future considerations.

The New York Rangers have announced they have traded defenseman Marc Staal and a second-round selection in the 2021 NHL Draft to Detroit in exchange for future considerations.

Clearly a salary cap dump for the Rangers, this is the type of trade that is reminiscent of the Nick Bjugstad deal that saw the Penguins trade the forward to the Minnesota Wild for virtually no return. It’s all about weaponizing cap space for Detroit and giving the Rangers options. The deal shaves $5.7 million in cap space off the New York Rangers books for next season.

For Detroit, they had all sorts of room to take on Staal’s cap hit and in exchange, they get a second-round pick for a player who will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season. It is very possible this deal is a precursor to a buyout by the Red Wings and it might make sense as to why Staal would waive his no-trade clause to go to a rebuilding team.

Staal was the No. 12 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft for the Rangers and played 13 seasons for the club. He made it to one Stanley Cup Final in 2014.

What Will the Rangers Do Next?

The New York Rangers are always players in free agency and this gives them some flexibility to look at a few options. At the same time, they have some internal work to do on some of their own contracts.

One the questions now will be if the Rangers choose to move Anthony Deangelo now that Staal is gone. There was some talk the restricted free agent might be on the market, and while he’s a different style of player than Staal, the Rangers will need to ice a blue line next season.

The Rangers said of the deal:

“Marc Staal has been an exemplary hockey player, teammate, and person from the moment he joined the New York Rangers organization. A consummate professional, Marc’s perseverance and dedication to the game made him such an integral part of our organization. Marc, his wife Lindsay, and his children Anna, Emily, and Jack will always be a part of the Rangers family, and we wish them all the best going forward.”
