Predators’ Mikael Granlund Confirms He’ll Test Free Agency

Mikael Granlund has informed the Nashville Predators that he’ll be testing the free agent market this offseason.

Nashville Predators forward Mikael Granlund will likely not be back with the club next season.  According to his agent Todd Diamond, Granlund will test free agency and take his chances on the open market.

As per a report from Adam Vingan of The Athletic (subscription required), there is a small chance he could return if the market doesn’t offer anything worth considering, but typically these types of statements from the players or the agents mean they’ll be a change of scenery for said player in the near future.

Diamond said Granlund wanted to see what his options were on the market before engaging in talks with the Predators again. Part of that could be because the 28-year-old scored just single goal in 16 regular season 2018-19 games with the Predators after being acquired for Kevin Fiala in a trade. It was clear almost immediately that the deal was a clear win for the Minnesota Wild. In 2019-20, Granlund upped his production with 17 goals and 30 points in 63 games, but still didn’t live up to expectations.

The offer from the Predators (assuming there was one) was likely much lower than the $5.75 million he was making this past season.

Who Might Be Interested?

Where Granlund winds up might depend on what kind of money he’s expecting. If he’s asking for big dollars, there probably aren’t a lot of teams who will bite.

This is going to be a tough year for a lot of free agents and Granlund might not like what he sees when he gets out there. He might even need to try and short-term deal just to see if he can’t find chemistry with a team and up his production to the point where he’s a hot commodity.

Where do you think he’ll wind up?
