Patrick Marleau Being Traded to Penguins

Chris Johnston of Sportnet broke the news that Patrick Marleau’s quest for a Stanley Cup will now take him through Pittsburgh as a trade call is pending that would see Marleau go to the Penguins.

The trade was then confirmed by a number of other insiders including John Shannon. A third-round pick comes back to San Jose. The pick becomes a second-rounder if Pittsburgh wins the Stanley Cup.

Patrick Marleau joined the Sharks again this season after being traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs and then bought out by the Carolina Hurricanes. Whether it was simply wanting to go home to San Jose or Marleau figured the Sharks would be contenders, clearly, San Jose’s poor season opened the door for a move.

It sounds like a third-round pick is going back the other way.

Speculation is that this speaks to issue with Jake Guentzel.

Earlier in the day, Pierre LeBrun noted:

“San Jose Sharks taking calls on both Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau today. Totally up to them if they sign off on going to a contender for a chance to win a Cup. Both would be welcomed back to SJ on July 1 if they wish. Pittsburgh has shown interest in Marleau.
