Panthers Expected to Fire Dale Tallon as GM Of Team

The Florida Panthers are expected to fire GM Dale Tallon after being eliminated from the 2020 NHL playoff race.

Within hours of being eliminated from this year’s NHL play-ins, it appears the Florida Panthers are going to make a change at the top of the organization. Reports from Sportsnet and NHL reporter Andy Strickland suggest Dale Tallon is about to relieved of his duties as General Manager.

They write:

After 10 years at the helm, the Florida Panthers are expected to part ways with general manager and president of hockey operations Dale Tallon, Sportsnet can confirm.

The news was originally reported by Fox Sports‘ Andy Strickland. It is not immediately clear when the move will be made.

Tallon was hired as GM of the Panthers in 2010 and was named president of hockey operations in 2017. The Panthers have struggled in recent years, both on the ice and in terms of fan attendance. Most recently, the team signed unrestricted free agent goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky for a whopping $10 million per season over seven seasons. Bobrovsky was anything but a $10 million goaltender this past season.

Tallon The Fall Guy Or Deserving of Release?

Since 2010, the Panthers earned two division titles (2011-12 and 2015-16) and made three playoff appearances. It’s fair to argue that Tallon has not done a good job as GM in Florida. That said, the Panthers’ penchant for changing their entire guiding organizational philosophy on a repeated basis can’t lead to success for any GM. It seems like every two years they change the way they approaching building and running a team. The next GM will have his hands full.
