NHL Trade Rumor: Hornqvist to Panthers for Matheson

There is a NHL trade in the works that would see the Penguins send forward Patric Hornqvist to the Florida Panthers for Mike Matheson.

The trade was revealed by Kevin Weekes as done and then it wasn’t. A number of insiders confirmed there was a lot of chatter about the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers making a trade Wednesday morning, but according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Pierre LeBrun and Josh Yohe of The Athletic the deal is not yet done.

That deal would see the Penguins send forward Patric Hornqvist to the Florida Panthers for Mike Matheson.

Whatever “glitch” is holding up the trade, there is a lot of talk about what the deal means for both sides. Hornqvist does hold a full no-trade clause, which could be part of the issue. It’s not clear if he invoked his right to refuse the deal.

A Trade of Bad Contracts

Most of the reaction on social media so far is that this a trade where two teams are making a deal for some pretty bad contracts. Some are saying Hornqvist looks like his better days have passed but he still has three seasons at $5.3 million on his deal.

Meanwhile, the Panthers would be moving Matheson, who has a whopping six seasons left at $4.875 million per.

As per @domluszczyszyn of The Athletic, who studies analytics closely, Hornqvist isn’t what he once was, “but still likely provides some value in a middle six with his goal-scoring and play-driving ability.” Meanwhile, Matheson is younger, but was overpaid not having proven he’s a top four defenseman.
