NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs, Bruins, Sharks, Oilers, More

In today’s NHL rumors, there are updates out of Toronto, Boston, San Jose and Edmonton.

In today’s NHL rumors and news update, there is speculation surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Boston Bruins are looking to add depth to their lineup and might have two targets in mind, and Ilya Kovalchuk is drawing interest from a couple of NHL teams. And, is Jesse Puljujarvi finally being moved out of Edmonton? Reports are that one team is close to trading for him.

Maple Leafs Linked to Okulov

According to NHL insider Chris Johnston, expect that the Toronto Maple Leafs will be ticking tires, if not announcing the signing of KHL forward Konstantin Okulov in the near future. The success of Ilya Mikheyev in Toronto has given Kyle Dubas reason to think more international additions could help the team.

In fact, there is such a strong speculated connection between the Maple Leafs and Okulov, other teams have removed themselves from the race to grab the player.

The Montreal Canadiens are also rumored to be interested.

Also expect roster moves out of Toronto as Sportsnet is reporting that defenseman Travis Dermott and forward Zach Hyman are nearing a return. Someone noted the team could move anywhere from four to seven players in the coming days.

Bruins Looking at Puljujarvi and Ho-Sang?

NBC Sports’ Joe Haggerty writes that the Boston Bruins need to do something about improving their offensive depth beyond the top line. Head coach Bruce Cassidy has said he’ll be patient and let players find their games but Haggerty thinks the team may do something.

Two inexpensive options out there that could fit into the top-six are Edmonton’s Jesse Puljujarvi and New York Islanders’ Joshua Ho-Sang.

Ilya Kovalchuk Trade Rumors

We’d already noted that Ilya Kovalchuk was on a list of possible trade candidates this season according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. LeBrun has added to that report, suggesting that the Boston Bruins and San Jose could be two interested parties.

LeBrun points to the fact that the signing bonus structure of Kovalchuk’s contract make him more attractive financially in the final two years of his deal. And, with Kovalchuk off to a strong start in 2019-20, the two teams would understandably be interested if they could figure out the question of salary cap.

LeBrun did suggest it wasn’t only San Jose and Boston that could be interested, but “a cash-conscious contender” could also take a look.

Carolina and Edmonton Close to a Deal?

The situation regarding Jesse Puljujarvi took an interesting turn a couple of days ago. Fansided reports that Omar Abdelgawad Karpat has just signed 28 year old Finnish forward Julius Junttila. They believe he’s being brought in to replace Puljujarvi when he heads back to North America.

Further to that, Pierre LeBrun notes that Carolina has been kicking tires on Puljujarvi for most of his stay in Finland. The rumored return would be Julien Gauthier and some draft picks.
