Might Senators Be Talking Trade With Penguins For a Goaltender?

Could the Ottawa Senators be interested in making a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for one of their goaltenders?

According to Postmedia’s Don Brennan, Ottawa Senators general manager, Pierre Dorion needs to get on the phone with the Pittsburgh Penguins and inquire about the availability of either Matt Murray or Tristan Jarry — admitting full well that Dorion should already know one of them is available.

Penguins GM Jim Rutherford stated he was aware the Pens would likely have to trade one of their netminders and mentioned earlier this week that both Murray and Jarry had garnered interest from NHL teams. Obviously, he did not divulge if Ottawa was one of them.

Currently, the Senators are running with Anders Nilsson and Marcus Hogberg as their goaltending tandem. With little prospect depth in the net (at least for projected starters), both Murray or Jarry would be considered an improvement. Referencing Eugene Melynk’s comments from a few months ago, Brennan writes that the Sens need a “No. 1 who can lead the team to all those championships in its “five-year run of unparalleled success” which, in case you’ve forgotten, is scheduled to begin in 2021.”

Specifically, Brennan thinks the Senators should target Murray. The older of the two netminders, he’s finishing up a $3.75-million per season deal and any trade should start and not require much more than the first-round pick Dorion acquired in the Jean-Gabriel Pageau deal. If it takes a little more, Brennan says the Senators should include what it takes to outbid other teams.

Is Murray Worth That?

The idea of trading for Murray if the Penguins are looking to move someone is a good idea. But, at what cost?

Brennan is suggesting the Senators offer whatever it takes because Murray is a proven winner with two Stanley Cups on his resume. There’s some pretty good winning goaltenders who might be available on the free agent market as well.

Granted, the Senators a have to of contracts that need to get done. But, if the priority is landing a starting goalie, they can certainly spend money in free agency and go after a player like Robin Lehner, Joacb Markstrom or Braden Holtby.
