Max Domi to Decide In A Week, Plus Alzner Opts Out

Montreal Canadiens forward Max Domi will wait 7-10 days before deciding on a return to play and defenseman Karl Alzner has opted out of a return to the team.

With questions surrounding his pre-existing health conditions, the Montreal Canadiens have announced that forward Max Domi will wait 7-10 days before making a decision on whether he intends to return to the team for Phase 3.

Other players are starting to come off the board with regularity. Edmonton lost Mike Green, the Canucks lost Sven Baertschi, the Flames Travis Hamonic, and Dallas Roman Polak. If Domi decides not to return, the Canadiens could be down two players as defenseman Karl Alzner has elected not to participate either.

Domi was a player already being closely watched because of his Type-1 Diabetes. At a greater risk, there was talk the NHL had the right, as did each respective team, to exclude players from participating if they were deemed unfit. A decision has not been made in Domi’s case, but contracting the virus would put him more at risk.

The team released a statement:

Considering Max’s health condition (Type 1 diabetes), both parties have agreed to take this responsible approach and to take this time to evaluate the ongoing situation, in order to make the best decision for Max’s health at the end of this period.

Alzner’s Decision to Opt Out

As previously mentioned, defenseman Karl Alzner has opted out as well. No reason was given for the decision but some have suggested the non-guaranteed playing time might have been a factor.

Alzner, 31, played four games for the Canadiens this season, posting a minus-one rating with zero points and four shots. He was not a regular for the Canadiens after being a huge free agency addition a couple of seasons ago. If he wasn’t going to be a regular in the lineup, he probably had to ask himself, if playing was worth the health risks associated with a return.
