How Long Before Max Domi Wants Out of Montreal?

Max Domi can’t be happy with the amount he;s playing for the Montreal Canadiens. But, does that mean his time with the Habs is coming to an end?

To say that fans and media have been sticking up for Montreal Canadiens forward Max Domi over the past 24 hours would be putting things mildly. Many have noticed his shrinking ice time and while Domi himself is saying and doing all the right things, these same fans and media are hinting the relationship between Domi and the Canadiens has soured to the point he won’t want to return.

Domi was the team’s leading scorer last season and returned to the playoffs despite the fact that it’s more dangerous for him health-wise to be there. Sportsnet’s Eric Engels noted yesterday:

Five shifts for Max Domi in the first period. Only Evans (3:08) and Weise (3:03) with less than his 3:33. No one on either side played less than his 2:39 at even strength.

Then, former NHL coach and TVA Sports analyst Michel Bergeron (translation required) lost his mind on the Canadiens decision to play Domi so little. Calling the decision to put him on the fourth line with the team’s weakest players, coach Julien’s treatment of Domi is unacceptable and Domi has to be wondering what his future will be under this current regime.

Bergeron said:

“The time is now. You put Domi in Jonathan Drouin’s spot on the first line and you hope for the best! What makes it even worse is that general manager Marc Bergevin supports Julien’s lineup decisions. There is something going on with this team!”

These two are not the only ones who have noticed Domi’s ice time has diminished. Social media has been buzzing over the past 10-15 hours that they don’t see a situation where Domi would want to return. So too, considering he’s going to ask for a certain amount as a restricted free agent, how can the Canadiens justify paying Domi $5 million or more per season as a bottom-six forward?

Meanwhile, The Team is Winning

Despite the drama that seems to surround this situation, the Montreal Canadiens have a surprising 2-1 series lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins and could eliminate the team and Sidney Crosby from playoff contention.

As for Domi, he said of his spot on the roster:

“Whenever you are on the ice, you’re expected to go 100% and do what it takes to help the team win. It doesn’t matter where you’re playing or who you’re playing with, just make the most of the time you’re on the ice…”

He’s taking a risk by being with his teammates during all of this and it’s not like he’s going to throw anyone under the bus, even if he’s feeling slighted.
