In breaking news, Jake Muzzin has been ruled out for four weeks with a broken hand.

Muzzin was injured during the Tampa Bay Lightning game. After he scored the first Maple Leafs goal of the game, he then missed the entire third period when Victor Hedman’s shot hit his right hand late in the second period. At the time, head coach Keefe reported that Muzzin would have “tests” on Wednesday to ascertain the severity of the injury.

Well, those tests came back positive – not in the sense of good luck for the team, but in terms of testing for broken bones. As a result, Muzzin will miss the next four weeks of the season as the team fights for a playoff spot. That makes the team’s defense, which has been an issue for the entire season, more suspect than ever.

The one upside is that perhaps it was a good thing that general manager Kyle Dubas was unable to pull the trigger on a deal that would have sent defenseman Tyson Barrie to another team. He’ll be needed now as the team goes forth.

Muzzin blocked Victor Hedman’s shot and left the game immediately, but not before scoring his sixth goal of the season. Head coach Sheldon Keefe relayed that he will have a further update on Muzzin’s condition Wednesday. He did, and it won’t be a happy Maple Leafs team. The hockey gods are not smiling on this bunch.

The goal Muzzin scored in the game was his sixth of the season. What bad luck for the big defenseman, who signed a four-year, $22.5 million contract extension on Monday. Now that he’s expected to miss so much time, it might become that straw that broke the team’s back as far as the playoffs go.

The team will see how far young defenseman can take them. Expect some movement from the Toronto Marlies as well.
