Leafs’ Jake Muzzin Stretchered Off Ice, Latest on Condition

Jake Muzzin fell awkwardly in Game 2 of the play-ins and was taken off the ice on a stretcher. He’s left the NHL bubble and we wait for details.

In a scary scene during the Toronto Maple Leafs versus Columbus Blue Jackets, a broken play resulted in a serious injury as Jake Muzzin went down awkwardly and had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher.

The Leafs were successful in tieing the series but they could have to move forward without a key piece of their blue line. There’s not much in the way of updates on the condition of Muzzin, only that he left the NHL bubble and was taken to the hospital for observation. Muzzin slid head-first into a knee and fell to the ice, staying down while being attended to by trainer Paul Ayotte. The Leafs were up 2-0 in the game and the Blue Jackets had just pulled netminder Joonas Korpisaloin an attempt to tie the game. The fall didn’t look terribly concerning at first and he was speaking to trainers the entire time but when Muzzin couldn’t get up, it was clear there was a problem.

Eventually, the medical staff made the decision to put him on a stretcher to take him out safely of the rink.

Muzzin was removed as the players clapped and banged their sticks as he exited the ice.

What’s the Latest on Muzzin?

There isn’t much in the way of news on how Muzzin is doing, but the Maple Leafs did release a statement:

Maple Leafs defenceman Jake Muzzin was transported to hospital following an on-ice collision in the third period tonight. He is alert and able to move all limbs. Further updates will be provided once available.

there will be questions about how long he’ll be out of the line up if he is deemed ok and suffered a bit of a stinger.

Chris Johnston of Sportsnet tweeted:

Regarding Jake Muzzin leaving the NHL bubble to go to hospital, I’m told medical officials will make the call on how long he’d have to quarantine if and when he’s ready to return. It will depend on where he goes, how long he’s gone and how much risk he’s exposed to.

Of course, there will now be debate about the cross-check that was delivered by Pierre-Luc Dubois. It didn’t seem vicious but it defintitely played a role in Muzzin going down.
