The Winnipeg Jets and Dustin Byfuglien story took an interesting turn on Monday. TSN’s Frank Seravalli reports that the Jets organization and the defenseman are working together in an attempt to mutually terminate his contract with the team.

Seravalli writes that over the next several days, according to multiple sources, Byfuglien’s formal suspension would end and close the grievance filed in November by the player. From there, the Jets would have a much clearer picture of their salary situation, freeing up GM Kevin Cheveldayoff to use the $7.6 million in space left from Byfuglien’s contract when it’s off the books.

Byfuglien Could Become an Unrestricted Free Agent

If executed, the contract termination would make Byfuglien an unrestricted free agent and he could sign with any NHL franchise. That said, his health is still a major question mark and Elliotte Friedman recently reported on Saturday’s Headline report that Byfuglien hadn’t even begun skating yet this season. His future is very much in doubt.

Will the Jets be able to get this contract termination done? What will Byfuglien do? Who will the Jets go after if all of this works out? These are just some of the many questions that will surround the Jets organization over the next few days to two weeks.
