Edmonton Oilers Colby Cave: A Medical Update

How is Colby Cave doing after his emergency surgery?

This morning the Edmonton Journal’s sports commentator Jim Matheson reported an update on Colby Cave’s medical condition. Specifically, the Edmonton Oilers forward had emergency brain surgery Tuesday at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, and doctors removed a colloid cyst that was causing pressure on his brain. Cave played 11 games for the Oilers this season; however, he spent most of the season playing for the Oilers American Hockey League affiliate in Bakersfield, California. After experiencing headaches Monday night, he was taken to hospital in Barrie, Ontario, and then transferred to Sunnybrook’s critical care unit with a brain bleed.

Still Uncertain About Cave’s Condition

We’re not certain what his condition currently is; however, he remains in a medically-induced coma. He was placed into that state prior to the surgery. What we do know is that the brain bleed wasn’t caused by an accident or is the result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the 25-year-old was is perfect shape before experiencing the headaches.

Cave’s wife Emily was understandably distraught and reported on Twitter that “Last night and today have been the worst days of my life. Please pray for my husband and best friend.” She tweeted that comment while Cave was in surgery.

Oilers general manager Ken Holland shared the same sentiment during a video conference call with reporters regarding the coronavirus.

Oilers’ GM Ken Holland Responds

Holland noted, “Our thoughts go out to Colby and Emily and his family. We’re thinking of them and praying for them. We’re all hoping for good news.”

Holland added that “In my experience with Colby, he’s a great person, he’s respectful, he’s a good pro. We’re all praying for good news and down the road he’s playing hockey.”

Cave is from Saskatchewan and played for the Swift Current Broncos where ex-Oilers’ center Mark Lamb was the coach. He was spending the NHL suspension in play with his wife’s family in Ontario.
