Could Taylor Hall Sign One-Year Deal With the Avs?

Might Taylor Hall do something similar to what Marian Hossa did years ago and sign a short-term deal with a Stanley Cup contender?

During a recent That’s Hockey segment, TSN’s analyst Craig Button looked at a few of the big-name UFA’s for this summer, trying to predict what they might do in a postseason that will be different than many that came before them. A lower salary cap could pose issues for players landing big deals, but how much will affect the biggest names in free agency?

He looked at players like Robin Lehner, Torey Krug, Alex Pietrangelo, and Taylor Hall. His prediction for Hall was perhaps the most interesting.

Button thinks Hall will wind up with the Colorado Avalanche and do something similar to what Marian Hossa did years ago when he elected not to sign a long-term deal and instead chase a Stanley Cup with legitimate contenders.

Back in 2009, Hossa headed to the Detroit Red Wings. When that didn’t pan out, he then went to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010, eventually winning the cup twice. Button suggests Hall may do something similar, seeing the Colorado Avalance as the team with the best odds of winning and the most flexibility. Button adds that Hall should sign a one-year deal and go “Cup hunting”.

Other Free Agent Predictions

When asked about other names, Button also wonders if goaltender Robin Lehner will wind up back in Ottawa where he sees a good fit with the Senators. He notes Lehner got started there but the team is in a different situation now. They have young players looking for a leader and lack a strong pipeline of goaltenders. They also have cap space.

He says Alex Pietrangelo will likely stay with the St. Louis Blues and Tory Krug won’t leave Boston despite rumors there’s not enough cap space to keep him.
