Chris Tanev Looking at One-Year Extension With Canucks

Chris Tanev told reporters he’d like to stay in Vancouver, even if it means signing a one-year deal with the Canucks.

According to Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Chris Tanev will be heading into the free agent and looking for a one-year deal with Vancouver. Knowing a lot of players will be forced to sign one-year deals due to financial uncertainty for teams, Tanev seems prepared to do something short-term, even though he’s only ever played with the Canucks and has no desire to go elsewhere.

The Canucks have already committed $63 million for next season to just 14 players and Tanev is aware things will be tight. It seems he’s opted not to push the situation, that he’ll take what he can now and hope his play warrants a longer-team deal when things rebound. Now 30, Tanev is one of those players who is at risk of being the type of player a team is forced to let walk.

“I’ve been here now for 10 years and I’ve loved every minute of it,” Tanev said. He added, “There’s definitely a trust between me and management and the ownership group, which has been awesome to me.”

Tanev explained that he has no desire to leave and if it means taking whatever term deal is on the table, he’s open to that. “Whether it’s one year or many years (on the next contract), I’d love to play my whole career here,” he said. He explained:

“Who knows what’s going to happen? But I love it here, I want to stay here, I think the team is going in the right direction, and if we come back to play this year, I think we’re going to have a real good shot at competing and going far. I’d like to be part of that in the future.”

Canucks Want Him Back Too

Fortunately for Tanev, it sounds like the Canucks would like to have him back. “There are guys who really help other players along, and I would say Chris Tanev is one of those guys,” Benning said. “I’d like to try to figure out a way to bring Chris back because I think he’s a good leader and our younger players look up to him.”
