Canadiens Shea Weber: A Humble Leader By Example

Shea Weber is more than a good hockey player. As the captain of the Montreal Canadiens, he leads by example. How is he doing so?

Here’s a little tweet I came by today that I thought was worth sharing. It might say something about the ethos of the Montreal Canadiens and their captain Shea Weber. In fact, could it be that this kind of thinking might be at least a reason why the Canadiens this season are – at least so far – the upstart team of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Weber Shows An Entire Team How to Behave

There’s a way of being in the world that’s good and a way of being in the world that’s less than good. As an old guy in my mid-70s who’s had an academic career of researching leadership and team-building in education, and whose research translates into other areas like sports as well, when you see good leadership in action it’s important to point it out.

Recently I saw a video of Carey Price speaking with Nick Suzuki after Price incredibly both saved the puck and, perhaps, Suzuki’s face in the process. It struck me then how fortunate it is that the young Habs’ players have leaders like Price – and now Weber.

Who, By the Way, Is Bill Riga?

The author/tweeter is correct. By the way, if you are interested in who Bill Riga is, he’s going into his seventh year as the Quinnipiac Bobcats’ Associate Head Coach and is in his 13th year at Quinnipiac. The Quinnipiac Bobcats have been hugely successful as an NCAA team with five recent tournament appearances and two appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four and the National Championship Game in 2013 and 2016.

During the 2019-20 season, Riga ended four years as a member of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee, with the last two serving as vice-chair for men’s ice hockey. Quinnipiac University is a private university of about 10,000 students in Hamden, Connecticut.
