The Colorado Avalanche have announced that one of their players has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. And, that player has apparently already recovered.
The Avs released a statement Thursday afternoon saying:
The Colorado Avalanche were advised today that a player has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The player has been at home in isolation since the first symptoms appeared, has recovered and is back to normal. The Avalanche have notified anyone who has had known close contact with the athlete.
It’s an interesting development because it doesn’t detail whether or not the player notified the team when they first saw symptoms and then in conjunction with the team put themselves in isolation, or if that player completed isolation and then notified the team they were better. The report suggests more of the latter, which might be a point of contention in NHL circles if true. It’s probably not a good sign that players are not informing their teams of their illnesses the minute they believe or know to have them, if that’s in fact what’s going on.
The Avalanche added, “The health and safety of our players, staff, fans, and community remains our highest priority” and they would continue to work with health officials to do whatever they could to keep the community safe.
Should Players Have To Tell Their Teams?
We’ve already seen three players now test positive but none of the names were released. While that shouldn’t be an issue and it should be the right of the player to stay anonymous to the media, the question might want to be asked, ‘If a player is ill or tests positive, is it their responsibility to notify the NHL and their team reps? After all, they could have gotten in contact with countless people before they chose to isolate themselves.”
In this case, it sounds like the player noticed early and distance himself from everyone else. But, what if it turns out more players were exposed and are only being told about it today? That’s not a good look.
